A third teenager, the driver of the car, is recovering in hospital from his injuries as is the driver of the tractor involved in the accident.

Councillor Alma Gallagher, a member of Mayo County Council, has described the deaths of the two young men and the injuries sustained by the survivors of the impact as “devastating."

She described the two young men who lost their lives as “well known and much loved in their communities with bright futures ahead of them."

“There are no words to describe how we are feeling.

"Cloonfad and Ballyhaunis are united in grief and our main focus is to support their families and young friends at this time

My deepest condolences to both families who I know so well and their many friends." Councillor Gallagher added.

Dermot Burke, an officer of Cloonfad United, described the situation as 'just mind-boggling.'

"James was a member of our Under-14 team and was very popular with his friends and teammates.

"Harry's family are famous within the club because of their fundraising and volunteering.

"Everybody within the community is dumbfounded and our condolences are with their families."

It is understood the car was travelling down a hill as a tractor and a trailer with bales was exiting from a field onto the roadway when the accident occurred.
