Mayo students into Junk Kouture World finals

A MAYO school is celebrating after three of its students were selected for the World Junk Kouture finals last night.

Sixty school teams competed in an electrifying show of creativity and sustainability at the RDS, with 10 chosen to go on to the international stage of the competition.

They include the entry 'La Mer Bougie' by Charlotte Monaghan, Ciara McDonagh and Jade O’Malley of Sancta Maria College in Louisburgh. Their teacher is Tom O'Flynn.

La Mer Bougie is made of recycled blue tealight cases and the silver wicks from inside them.

The girls designed a corset out of the wicks and broken parts of the cases that were unusable in a skirt. The structure of the skirt consists of pipes and ropes and they then strung the tealights onto string and twisted them to construct the skirt.

The hat was casted to model Ciara's head, with the wicks then stuck onto the headpiece and visor made from broken tealight cases.

The shoes are flat pump in style, made from crushed tealights and wicks.
