Mayo man set to be appointed new FAI chief executive

Mayo man David Courell is set to be appointed the new chief executive of the Football Association of Ireland.

According to national media reports, the board of the FAI has voted to rubberstamp the recommendation of its appointments committee to make Courell the FAI’s permanent CEO.

He has been filling the role in an interim capacity for the past six months since Jonathan Hill stepped down from the role.

A son of Eamon and Kathleen Courell, Pontoon Drive, Castlebar, he joined the FAI in February 2022 as its Chief Operating Officer.

It is reported that Courell faced competition for the role from Sarah Keane, the CEO of Swim Ireland, and Munster Rugby CEO Ian Flanagan, who formerly worked with Leicester City.
