Progress made on relief road for south Mayo village

EMERGING routes for the new Cong relief road will be published this year, Minister of State Alan Dillon has confirmed.

In an update, he said: “Having sought an update from the Roads Design Section of Mayo County Council in relation to the proposed outer relief road on the R345, I have been informed that officials have started working on phase two of four phases for the design of the road.

“I am informed that O’Connor, Sutton Cronin (OCSC) are the consultants engaged to the deliver the project through the four phases and will work alongside the Roads Design Section of the council to progress the project.

“This phase will involve a major progression to the new road by developing the different route options, constraints, and the selection of the preferred option. Phase two also involves a constraints study, public consultations and submissions, preliminary structures design, preliminary alignment design, screening for appropriate assessment, a road safety impact assessment, and the options report.”

He added: “The timeline for phase two is 12 months so it is expected that the preferred routes will be identified with public consultation and submissions being completed over this time.

“It is important that progress is made on this project as there are a number of large industries in the area with large HGVs passing through the village.

“I will continue to lobby the Department of Transport and TII to ensure funding is put in place so this outer relief road is progressed in a timely manner.”
