Final call for Mayo primary schools to join Healthy Heroes initiative

Healthy Heroes, supported by the Irish Bread Bakers Association (IBBA), is issuing a final call to Mayo primary schools to register for the 2024/25 educational programme.

Now in its 11th year, created by teachers, behavioural and nutrition experts, Healthy Heroes is one of Ireland’s leading lunchtime classroom initiatives, reaching over 300,000 children to date.

As part of this year’s programme, four participating schools will be awarded a bursary for making an outstanding contribution to the initiative.

The nutrition and education initiative demonstrates first-hand how fun and healthy eating habits are cultivated, while offering students the opportunity to build on a variety of skills such as leadership, communication and teamwork.

Furthermore, Healthy Heroes empowers students to make responsible and healthy choices when it comes to food and snacks, which can have positive impacts on their nutritional habits in the future.

Shauna McCarthy, who oversees the Healthy Heroes programme on behalf of the IBBA, said: “Healthy Heroes has helped make a real difference in fostering positive nutritional attitudes in schools across the country for over a decade. Showing children that healthy eating can be enjoyable, while also teaching them valuable skills such as teamwork and leadership, are crucial to shaping their future attitudes towards nutrition.

“We look forward to building on the positive impacts of Healthy Heroes in schools all over the country.”
