Mayo set to be better placed for greater offshore investment opportunities

A Mayo Oireachtas member has welcomed the announcement that the process for Designated Area Marine Plans (DMAPs) off the west coast will begin next year.

In response to Senator Lisa Chambers' call for an accelerated DMAP process, Minister for Environment Eamon Ryan confirmed that mapping efforts will commence in 2025.

The Castlebar-based representative said: “This is a significant step forward and demonstrates a growing recognition of the importance of offshore wind energy for Ireland.

"By initiating the DMAP process for the west coast, we can harness the immense potential that exists here in Mayo and across the region.”

Senator Chambers emphasised the transformative potential of offshore wind energy, describing it as “Ireland's gold and Mayo's gold.”

She explained, “The potential to meet Ireland's energy needs tenfold is within our grasp.

"Offshore floating wind farms can provide clean energy to fuel industries, agriculture, and homes without impacting communities in the same way that onshore projects can.

This is an opportunity to reimagine our energy future and transform the region.”

Additionally, she highlighted the potential community dividends for fishing communities and the broader population.

“There is a unique opportunity here to not only support our energy transition but also to ensure that local communities benefit from these developments.

"The offshore wind sector can provide sustainable income and employment opportunities for fishing communities, helping to secure their futures.”

Senator Chambers also pointed out the opportunity to transform the Corrib Gas field when it is no longer producing gas.

“We have the chance to create an energy park or hydrogen plant, providing a sustainable future for the region,” she stated.

In conjunction with these developments, Senator Chambers referenced the announcement in Budget 2025 regarding the sale of AIB for €3 billion, which will see €750 million allocated to EirGrid to upgrade the national grid.

“It is imperative that we upgrade the grid in the west and northwest as a matter of urgency to meet our energy demands and support the potential of offshore wind,” she added.

“The infrastructure must be in place to ensure we can capitalise on the opportunities presented by renewable energy.”

Senator Chambers remains committed to advocating for a robust and sustainable energy strategy for Mayo and Ireland, emphasising the need for timely actions to secure a cleaner and more prosperous future for the region.
