Neurology service expansion for Mayo patients

MINISTER of State Alan Dillon has expressed optimism that an announcement today (Wednesday) will provide a major boost for neurology patients across Mayo.

The development is expected to confirm that Mayo University Hospital (MUH) has been selected for the Department of Health’s expansion of neurology services.

Minister Dillon, who has long advocated for improved healthcare access in the region, welcomed the imminent decision, which he says will provide critical support for patients with neurological conditions in Mayo.

He outlined: “This will be a very significant step forward for those living with a neurological diagnosis in Mayo, as they will be able to access vital services close to home.”

Minister Dillon outlined: “The Neurological Alliance of Ireland, with whom I have closely worked, made it clear that the lack of local neurology services places an undue burden on patients, many of whom must travel to Galway for treatment. Expanding these services at Mayo University Hospital will not only improve patient care but also enhance the hospital’s overall service offerings.”

He has engaged directly with key stakeholders on this issue, including Magdalen Rogers, executive director of the Neurological Alliance of Ireland, and Louise Power, a Mayo-based advocate for neurology patients. Additionally, he has been in contact with Tony Canavan, regional executive officer, West and North-West, HSE, to discuss the need for the appointment of a neurology position in Mayo.

“The Model of Care for Neurology Services in Ireland clearly stipulates that all Model 3 hospitals should have a neurology service, and Mayo University Hospital has been an outlier in this regard. I am delighted to see significant progress being made and this expansion will correct that and provide much-needed care for patients locally,” he said.
