MEP blasts Uisce Éireann over ongoing sewage crisis in Mayo town
Independent Ireland MEP Ciarán Mullooly has voiced strong concerns regarding the long-standing issue of raw sewage discharge into Newport Bay, raising the matter with the EU Commissioner.
A recent report by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) revealed that it could take up to 20 years to fully address the problem.
The untreated sewage is having a detrimental effect on the local environment, including fisheries, tourism, and future development in the region.
During a recent visit to the affected site, MEP Mullooly expressed his disbelief at the prolonged nature of the situation, citing the urgent need for action to protect the area's economic and environmental well-being.
Mullooly also confirmed that he had spoken with incoming EU Commissioner Jessika Roswall, who informed him that Uisce Éireann must provide a concrete timeline for the construction of a waste treatment facility in Newport.
Failure to comply with the EU directive could result in penalties being imposed on the Irish government.
