Soccer at Mayo's MacHale Park, why not?

by Auld Stock

WITH Casement Park, Belfast, out of the running as a venue for the playing of games, Cork has been quickly out of the traps in putting Páirc Uí Caoimh forward as an alternative venue for UEFA championship finals matches.

Fair enough.

MacHale Park, Castlebar, is the ideal venue for international soccer games.

Farfetched?

Perhaps. However, I am sure Castlebar Mitchels and Mayo GAA Board would welcome the idea.

The late Pat Quigley, Castlebar, was president of the Football Association of Ireland and was regarded as an outstanding official. He, too, would have welcomed the idea.

The playing of international soccer games in McHale Park might be regarded as a pipedream by the cynics.

I disagree.

The idea should be given a try.
