Westport hold on to win their first Mayo LGFA senior title

Westport were crowned Mayo LGFA senior club champions for the very first time in their history after recording a one-point victory over reigning champions Knockmore in the 2024 decider, which was played in front of a big attendance at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park, Castlebar, on Sunday afternoon, writes Aiden Henry.

In an action-packed final, Westport – who were deserving winners – just held off a great late rally by Knockmore to come out on top by the narrowest of margins, 2-5 to 2-4.

With the Westport team and their followers ready to celebrate this historic victory, team manager Pop Geraghty was a very relieved and happy man, to say the least.

“Absolutely delighted for that group of women,” he said. “They're absolutely outstanding. They've worked tirelessly, they've had a lot of near chances and come close. Just so, so proud of every one of them, absolutely outstanding.”

Westport laid the foundation for this success in the opening half. They controlled most of the play and by the end of the 30 minutes had also taken control of the scoreboard, leading by five points (1-4 to 0-2).

Knockmore, for their part, didn’t settle into their usual rhythm at all for most of the first half, giving the ball away cheaply on a number of occasions and fluffing a number of scoring chances.

However, they mounted a great second-half comeback, firing in a late goal to leave just the minimum between the sides.

They even had a late chance to level the game from a place ball but the free went just wide, leaving Westport winners - and deservedly so.
