Addressing pedestrian safety in east Mayo town

AN update on measures to address pedestrian safety in Ballyhaunis has been issued by Councillor Alma Gallagher.

Areas under focus include the railway bridge, Clare Street and Bridge Street, as well as a push for funding to upgrade the N60.

In a social media post, Councillor Gallagher set out the following:

“The loose flag stones under the railway bridge in Ballyhaunis have been removed by the council, and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) are scheduled to carry out essential maintenance works.

“At the next district meeting, I will be tabling a motion to urgently upgrade the crash barrier and footpath at the bridge, prioritising the health and safety of pupils at Scoil Íosa and all pedestrians.

“The loose flagstones on Clare Street will also be replaced following a recent meeting I facilitated with residents and area engineers, ensuring safer access for everyone.

“Increased safety measures at the pedestrian crossing on Bridge Street is also a key priority, as we continue working to improve safety in high-traffic areas.”

And, she continued: “I am working with Alan Dillon TD to increase pressure on TII to reinstate funding for the vital upgrade of the N60 and the bridge. These improvements are crucial for the safety and wellbeing of our community.”
