Big show of support for Holy Trinity's campaign for new school

THERE was a big show of support for Westport's Holy Trinity National School as it held a walk today to highlight its plight, with its plans for a new school building on hold.

Holy Trinity were gifted the old Scoil Padraig site on Altamount Street for a new school, but the Department of Education has since offered it to the local girls secondary school for temporary accommodation.

Holy Trinity held a walk today from the Octagon to send out an SOS (Save Our School).

Speaking on the 'brilliant show of support right across the community' for Holy Trinity School today, Councillor Peter Flynn said: “It is now 14 years since the existing Holy Trinity School was categorised as not fit for purpose and, sadly, the school is no further on in their quest to relocate to the old national school on Altamont Street, which was dedicated to them by the Sisters of Mercy many moons ago.

“In my view the Department of Education is ultimately responsible for this fiasco. Pitting schools and communities against each other is certainly not what is required and we need the department to develop a strategy/plan that allows the Holy Trinity to relocate and for our secondary schools to move forward.”
