Mayo County Council to host vacancy clinic in Lahardane to address dereliction

Mayo County Council in collaboration with the Lahardane Community Development Group, will host a vacancy clinic on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in Lahardane Community Centre (F26 KH64).

The event aims to address the issue of dereliction and promote the reuse of vacant properties, it's the first of its kind in north Mayo.

Caoimhín Rowland, Chairperson of the Lahardane Community Development Group, spoke about the importance of tackling vacant homes: “There are currently 100 vacant or derelict homes in Addergoole parish. Since 2012, only one new home has been built in Lahardane village, highlighting a significant stall in local housing development.

Our goal is to eliminate dereliction in the area by 2030.” He continues, “This way we can entice young people to stay locally, encourage our diaspora to return home and create an even more vibrant community.”

Rising property prices and high rents, currently averaging €1,500 per month in Lahardane village, have made housing unaffordable for many. With tourism in the area growing, particularly due to attractions like the Titanic Park and Nephin, the demand for short-term accommodation is high.

However, tourists struggle to find suitable accommodation in the Summer months.

“We believe the vacancy clinic can start a meaningful conversation around dereliction and how to bring these properties back into use,” added Rowland. “We have created an interactive map that identifies vacant homes throughout the parish.

For homeowners hesitant to engage due to concerns about ownership of their land, we can offer tailored solutions.”

The vacancy clinic will provide:

Information on Grants: Vacant homes officers will be present to discuss grant options, including over €100,000 in funding available to property owners.

Incentives for Property Owners: From Croí Conaithe grants to opportunities in the short-term rental market, homeowners can explore various ways to restore and utilise their properties.

SEAI Retrofitting Advice: Officials from SEAI will provide guidance on retrofitting options, helping homeowners make their properties more energy-efficient.

Digital Support for Elderly Residents: Special attention will be given to bridging the digital divide, ensuring that older residents are informed about available schemes.

The event is part of ongoing efforts, similar to recent successful clinics held in Castlebar and Louisburgh, to encourage local residents to repurpose vacant homes and improve the housing situation in county Mayo.
