Closing Mayo road for verge cutting 'makes no sense'

THE closing of the new road between Castlebar and Westport for verge cutting has been questioned at council level.

“Can we not find a way of cutting the grass without closing the road,” Councillor Michael Kilcoyne asked management at a meeting this week.

It doesn't make sense, he said, and he believed there was no other dual carriageway in the country where this happens.

Chief executive Kevin Kelly said his understanding is that it has to do with there being no hard shoulder, for health and safety.

It wasn't the only such one in the country, he said, but he agreed the situation was 'more rare than common'.
