The bar area of Bucko's Public House in Castlebar.

Legendary Mayo pub to reopen after eight months closed

Bucko's Pub, Linenhall Street, Castlebar, is set to reopen its doors after being closed since last March.

Martin O'Sullivan, a former member of staff of the Western Care Association who previously worked and managed licensed premises, has decided to enter the trade in the county town in a welcome move.

A native of Tipperary, he is expected to have the public house ready for business next month and it will also serve food when fully operational.

A resident of Castlebar for the past 25 years, Martin is widely popular in the community and he is wished well with the venture.

Bucko’s Bar was redeveloped to an exceptionally high standard in the early 2000s and spans approximately 3,000 square feet across three floors, offering a versatile and modern layout ideal for a thriving hospitality business.

The ground floor features the main bar area, a welcoming space that leads to basement facilities including toilets and a keg room.

The first floor presents a second bar complete with a fully fitted commercial kitchen, perfect for a restaurant setup.

Patrons can also enjoy a smoking and external seating area with a picturesque view of the town river, adding to the venue’s charm and appeal.

The original owner of the premises was Bucko Sheridan who kept a cow at the rear of the property which was marched through the bar every evening en route to a stable nearby, much to the amusement of customers!

The story has passed into local folklore.
