Storm plays havoc with weekend's sporting fixtures in Mayo

Storm Ashley is playing havoc with the weekend's sporting fixtures in Mayo.

Mayo GAA confirmed on Friday evening that the Connacht Gold Senior Football final between Knockmore and Ballina Stephenites scheduled for Sunday (October 20) will not go ahead due to the Met Éireann Status Orange wind warning issued for the county. The decision was reached following an emergency Mayo GAA County Board officers' meeting.

Mayo GAA cathaoirleach Seamus Tuohy said player and supporter safety are the priorities and postposing the county senior final is the correct decision for all concerned.

After consultation with both clubs, the game has been rescheduled for next Saturday, October 26, at 7 p.m. in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park, Castlebar. It will be played as a double header with the Treanlaur Catering Junior Football final, which will now throw in at 4.45 p.m. on the same evening.

Mr. Tuohy thanked Knockmore and Ballina Stephenites for their understanding, stating it is the correct decision for all involved. He also confirmed that all tickets purchased for the game and for the Mayo GAA TV live stream would be honoured next Saturday, meaning supporters do not have to rebook.

The Egan Jewellers Mayo Intermediate Football final between Crossmolina Deel Rovers and Moy Davitts will go ahead as scheduled on Sunday, October 27, at 2.30 p.m.

The presentation of the Jubilee Teams – Crossmolina (senior) and Belmullet (junior) – will take place on Saturday, while the presentation of the intermediate Jubilee Team (Swinford) will take place on Sunday.

Mayo GAA has also confirmed that Under 21 and Under 15 games scheduled for Sunday have also been postponed.

Meanwhile, the soccer grounds in Mayo will be quiet too due to the Met Eireann's weather warning. All men's Connacht Cup, Shield and Girls Under 19 Cup fixtures have been postponed, the Connacht FA has announced.

All of the games have been rescheduled for next weekend, October 26/27, and as this is a blanket call-off by the Connacht FA, home advantage still stands.
