New Marie Howet exhibition in west Mayo library

An exhibition of eight vibrant Marie Howet biographical banners, designed by Dublin-based graphic artist Cathy Fleming, is currently underway in Westport Library.

Howet, a famous Belgian painter, had a 50-year personal and professional association with Achill, and that unique story is explored in this in-depth exhibition.

The 40th anniversary of her death was remembered at an event on the island recently, following which the Belgian committee (which includes Dr. Maryse Boeur) that looks after the heritage centre in her Libramont home, has put in place a permanent exhibition on site.

Achill paintings feature prominently in that Belgian display, and further developments since that island tribute are afoot also, including the possibility of a documentary being made about the painter’s life on Achill.
