Sinking of ship in Mayo bay attracts marine life and global audience online

THE sighting of more than 100 dolphins in Killala Bay has been one of the first positives following the sinking of the MV Shingle.

The sinking, to create an artificial reef, was a global attraction, with 2.6 million hits on Mayo North Tourism online alone, one of the driving forces behind the project told a meeting of Mayo County Council.

Councillor Michael Loftus said recently there were more than 100 dolphins swimming around, feeding on the fish life there.

“We never had 100 dolphins ever before coming into the bay,” he remarked.

Accepting the warm congratulations of his elected colleagues, Councillor Loftus highlighted all the people and agencies who brought the project to fruition.

It was about promoting the county and bringing employment and income and it had created a lot of positivity, he said.
