A 12-point proposal outlined for popular Mayo lakeside amenity

An elected member of Mayo County Council wants the authority to carry out further works at Lough Lannagh in Castlebar.

Councillor Ger Deere has asked that costings and necessary reports be prepared in respect of a 12-point plan he has outlined for the popular amenity.

The points are as follows:

1. Finish the railing at the bridge and as part of this work install the opening plaque of the bridge on the new railing at eye level.

2. Install new public lighting and CCTV cameras on the section of the walkway overlooking the cemetery, and any other areas where they are required.

3. Finish the tarmacadam to all sections of the walkway not already tarmacadamed.

4. Erect new signage including map and distance of walkway at all entrance locations to Lough Lannagh. Remove all existing signs.

5. Are E Scooters allowed to travel on walkways?

6. Remove all ivy from what’s known as Burke’s Castle. Erect secure fencing, flood light, and erect information signage.

7. To install a water station at suitable location.

8. Establish proper procedures for the erection of permanent structures, seating and planting at all locations at Lough Lannagh.

9. Cut down and remove all trees that have died due to “ash dieback” and plant native species trees as replacements.

10. Request the environmental officer to establish why there are almost no young ducklings and swan signets on the lake this year. Procure mink traps if they are required.

11. Clarify if all dogs should be kept on leads at all times and what breeds should be muzzled at all times.

12. Identify costings and a suitable location for the provision of portable toilets.

The issues will be discussed at next Wednesday's meeting of Castlebar Municipal District.
