Proceeds from Luke's Truck Run goes to Mayo special education facility

Luke’s Truck Charity Run has proved a major success.

The event took place to honour the memory of Luke O’Malley from Cross, who sadly passed away in September 2023 after a very brief illness.

Luke worked for ECC Timber Products for many years and had numerous colleagues and friends in the haulage industry. His family decided that a truck run would be a very fitting tribute to Luke.

The truck run began in Headford and made its way through Luke’s home village of Cross, over to his workplace in Cornamona, and back to Cross.

Some 113 trucks formed an extremely impressive convoy which received great support at each stage of the route.

The day finished with entertainment and an auction compered by Ray McHugh in O’Malley’s Bar, Cross, where many of Luke’s family and friends gathered to celebrate his memory.

Luke’s family generously decided to donate proceeds of the event to Cross National School for their school building fund.

It exceeded all expectations, with €51,310.63 raised, and this will be used to build a special education teaching room. The school extends thanks to the O’Malley family for this incredibly generous gesture.

Luke’s Truck Run was a big undertaking, but there was a fantastic committee of Luke’s family and friends involved, expertly led by Luke’s wife Mary and their children Ava and Jamie.

The O’Malley family and Cross NS thank the following for their help and generosity: The O’Malley and Loughlin families, ECC Timber Products, P and D Lydon, Cross Distribution, O’Malley’s Bar, Corrib Rugby, Presentation College, Headford, the parents of Cross NS, local businesses that provided prizes and the volunteers who helped throughout the event. A word of thanks also to the participants in the truck run and all who gave donations and sponsorship.

Luke’s Truck Run was a tremendous success, a very memorable and special day for his family and friends, and a reflection of the esteem in which Luke O’Malley was held in the local and wider communities.
