Busy road between Mayo and Galway 'a nightmarish death trap'

An Oireachtas member has described the N84 route between Galway and Castlebar, via Ballinrobe, as 'a nightmarish death trap'.

Deputy Sean Canney said plans for the upgrading of the roadway are not currently on the agenda of either Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) or the National Transport Authority (NTA.)

"I would like this road to be considered as a priority," he added.

Speaking generally about roads investment in the west of Ireland, Deputy Eamon Ó Cuív observed: "We always get small projects, but big things are needed.

"Taking projects in excess of €20 million, we are missing 12%.

"The population of the region is 17% and we have only 5% of the investment, so we would nearly need to treble the input of projects."
