Lahardane is the first of 10 pilot areas leading the innovative approach.

"100 Homes in 100 Days" initiative by Mayo parish aiming to revitalise rural Ireland

Mayo community leaders today announced the launch of the "100 Homes in 100 Days Challenge," an initiative designed to increase home ownership for young people and to revitalise rural communities.

Spearheaded by Paul Sweeney, Tom Gilligan, Caoimhín Rowland and Rob Cass, the pilot programme is launching in Lahardane, in collaboration with Mayo County Council and the local Community Development Group including Aoife Garrett, Niamh Leonard and Áine O'Boyle.

Inspired by the drive and potential they’ve seen in rural parishes, the team aims to foster a future where Irish communities can thrive, especially outside the Pale.

The programme, with its roots in the parish of Addergoole, plans to roll out across 10 additional parishes nationwide, giving local communities the support and resources needed to open doors to new homeowners.

"We’re on a mission to unlock the hidden potential in parishes outside of Dublin, empowering young people to take ownership in their own communities," the team shared.

"Our goal is to help these communities thrive once again."

With generous backing from impact investors who are committed to the cause, the initiative has access to a remarkable €100 million fund for 2025.

This funding will allow more parishes to participate on a first-come, first-served basis, providing a unique opportunity for communities to reclaim their vibrancy through property ownership for the younger generation.

The team encourages any parish interested in joining the next round of the 100 Days Challenge to reach out.

“We’re committed to proving the sceptics wrong by showcasing the resilience and energy within communities across Ireland,” they said.

“Mayo’s taking the lead, setting an example for all counties to follow.”

For those interested in following the journey, updates will be provided weekly on the project’s website.

Community leaders are also invited to submit their own parishes for consideration in the 2025 challenge, as the group continues their mission to breathe new life into rural Ireland.
