Blocked gulleys and leaves on paths a concern in Mayo county town

BLOCKED gulleys and leaves on paths are a concern in Castlebar, highlighted by Councillor Ger Deere this week.

Cleaning gulleys and removing the leaves need be prioritised, he told a municipal district meeting.

Leaves on the paths are lethal, especially for older people.

There should be a programme in housing estates for removing leaves, he told council management.

On footpaths in general, he said they are 'disintegrating' in some areas of the town and a works programme is needed to address issues.

Councillor Blackie Gavin agreed that a block grant is needed for footpaths as there is no money being invested.

He also highlighted a number of areas where blocked gulleys are causing issues.

Councillor Gavin said the problem is that the council has no staff, with just two or three people to look after Castlebar.

It was like a fire fighting exercise and they needed more staff on the ground or they won't be able to get these jobs done, he said.
