What's happening with the old courthouse in Mayo town?
by Auld Stock
I AM not aware of any developments taking place in the old courthouse, Castlebar Street, Westport.
The building was closed some years ago when the courts system was revamped.
There was a suggestion a short time ago the courthouse was about to be utilised for some local purpose. Matters such as this move at a very slow pace in Ireland.
Westport is one of the leading tourist resorts in this country and perhaps the courthouse could be used for some tourist related project.
Over one hundred years ago the area surrounding the courthouse was known as Kirk Street.
Kirk is the old Scottish name for a church. The name kirk is also incorporated in a number of Scottish surnames.
