Chambers welcomes €7.5m. for Mayo multi-sports campus

SENATOR Lisa Chambers has welcomed a significant milestone for the region, with the confirmation of €7.5 million in funding for the Mayo Multi-Sports Campus in Castlebar.

The investment, granted through the Large Scale Sports Infrastructure Fund under the Department of Sport, represents a transformative development for the county’s sports infrastructure.

The campus is set to be an impressive facility, boasting a range of top-tier amenities including an athletics track, sprint track, throwing area, grass pitches, an all-weather pitch, floodlights, and fully equipped changing rooms.

This extensive infrastructure will provide a vital foundation for athletes of all levels and promises to establish Mayo as a premier venue capable of attracting both national and international competitions.

Senator Chambers praised Mayo County Council for their dedicated efforts in preparing and submitting a successful application, which has brought this ambitious project to fruition.

“This funding is a testament to the hard work and commitment of Mayo County Council, who have worked tirelessly to secure this investment for our county. This campus will be a major asset for Mayo, creating opportunities for local athletes and sports enthusiasts, while also drawing major sporting events to our region,” she said.

Senator Chambers worked closely with Fianna Fáil Minister for Sport, Thomas Byrne, on this project and is delighted to see it come to fruition, marking a major step forward for sports infrastructure in Mayo.

Located near the existing sports amenities at Lough Lannagh in Castlebar, the new facility will complement the existing swimming pool, tennis courts, and the soon-to-be-completed climbing wall. Together, these facilities will form a comprehensive sports hub, creating a dynamic environment for both recreational and competitive sports.

Senator Chambers concluded: “The Mayo Multi-Sports Campus is a landmark achievement that will bring lasting benefits to our community. I look forward to seeing it become a hub for athletes and visitors alike, enriching the sporting and economic landscape of Mayo.”
