Former Mayo GAA goalie Michael Corkery will be fondly remembered
Fond tributes are being paid to former Mayo goalkeeper Michael Corkery who passed away on Saturday in his 95th year at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Castlebar.
During his working life, Michael was a valued member of the staff of Telecom Eireann.
In one of many tributes, Eamon Joyce, one of Mick’s former work colleagues, wrote: “He was a great friend of many and looked at the brighter side of life.”
During an illustrious GAA career, Michael starred in goal for the Mayo senior team and played for Castlebar Mitchels.
He was part of the Mitchels squad which made a groundbreaking trip to the United States in 1960.
In the wake of his passing, friends, former work colleagues and admirers of his football prowess are expressing condolences to his relatives.
“He was a gentleman who was much loved," read one condolence.
Another ex-Telecom staffer said: “I would always come away with a smile on my face having enjoyed his company so much."
Another wrote: “He left his mark and will be fondly remembered. An actual legend."
Michael, who lived at Sarnaught, Castlebar, prior to entering the care of the Sacred Heart Hospital, was predeceased by his parents Catherine and Patrick, brother and sisters and his best friend Michael Neary.
He is deeply regretted by his loving family sisters Philomena and Angela, brothers Fr. Eamon, Neilus and Oliver, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Michael will repose at Coady’s Funeral Home, Castlebar, on Tuesday evening from 5.30 to 7 p.m.
Removal on Wednesday morning at 8.45 a.m. for Requiem Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Mel’s Cathedral, Longford.
Michael will be laid to rest afterwards in Ballymacormack Cemetery in his native Co. Longford.
