Mayo in mourning over death of 'remarkable woman' Jean Cross
She was a leading figure in the Yes Equality Mayo group ahead of 2015 referendum
The death has occurred of Jean Cross, Ballinrobe, and formerly of Drumcondra, Dublin.
She died peacefully after a long illness in the loving care of her family and the staff of Mayo Hospice, Castlebar.
The deceased was a leading Mayo figure during the landmark 2015 referendum on the Thirty-Fourth Amendment of the Constitution (Marriage Equality) Act 2015.
The amendment was approved by 62% of voters, paving the way for state legalised same-sex marriage.
Jean was exceptionally proud that Mayo had voted by 52% to 48% in favour of marriage equality in the historic referendum in which she played such a central campaigning role as chairperson of Yes Equality Mayo.
Many fond tributes are being paid on social media to Jean, who was an accomplished writer and author, her best known book being The Jam Maker: A Bernie Brownfeather Mystery.
"Jean was a remarkable woman, a wonderful writer, a great feminist and a dedicated activist. It was an honour and a pleasure to have known her," one stated.
"Jean was a kind, thoughtful and intelligent woman," another said.
A further tribute observed: "Jean was the best, fiercely intelligent, highly empathic with a gentle strength."
Jean was beloved partner of Angela and sister of Dave, Catherine and Helen.
She is sadly missed by her family, Nicole, Aidan, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family on their loss.
Remains will be reposing at her family home in Drumcondra tomorrow (Friday) from 4 p.m. onwards.
Jean’s cremation service will take place on Saturday morning, at 10 a.m. at Glasnevin Crematorium.
May her gentle soul rest in peace.
