Mayo lakeside Christmas lighting proposal

A Christmas lighting scheme has been mooted at Lough Lannagh in Castlebar to enhance the area during the festive season.

Castlebar Municipal District (MD) has been asked to create the scheme in conjunction with the Castlebar Community Cleanup Group.

Councillor Blackie Gavin brought the idea to the monthly MD meeting, saying it would be the start of something that could be a huge attraction.

He highlighted events at the lake over Christmas, including the GOAL Mile, Christmas Day swim, the dragon boats, and hundreds of walkers and runners enjoying the amenity.

Away from Lough Lannagh, a range of events are taking place in Castlebar, starting with the Christmas lights switch-on on November 29. On the Saturday and Sunday there will be outdoor Christmas movies for families at Collector's Lane.

The Christmas market will now run over two dates - December 6 and 13 - in parallel with the Christmas in the Barracks event. And that second weekend (14th) will also see a Christmas train around the Mall.

Other events are also being progressed by the Travellers Friend and the Linenhall, elected representatives were told, with 'lots of reasons' to come to Castlebar this Christmas.
