Mayo LGFA heroes recall fond memories of the late Brendan Martin

Brendan Martin, a pivotal figure in the foundation of ladies' Gaelic football, has died at the age of 86, and heroes of the All-Ireland-winning Mayo teams have recalled him with fondness.

His contribution to the sport has left a lasting legacy and he will always be remembered for his dedication and passion for promoting ladies' Gaelic football since its inception.

Brendan visited the Mayo ladies' 20-year reunion back in 2020 when it was held in Castlebar. He formed many friendships with members of that team after their All-Ireland wins in 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003.

The captains of these teams last met Brendan in Croke Parke in 2023 for the LGFA 50th anniversary celebrations, and Brendan was fittingly honoured in Croke Parke this year to mark his special contribution to the association.

The winners of the LGFA All-Ireland senior championship continue to receive the Brendan Martin Cup on an annual basis. His name will be forever associated with ladies' Gaelic football, and many teams will fondly remember him as a man of remarkable character.

Mayo LGFA and past players would like to extend sympathy to Brendan’s wife, Mairead, sons, Peter and Cormac, and his extended family and many friends. May he rest in peace.
