Civic honour for Castlebar Celtic FC marking 100 years of achievement
"The enduring legacy of the founder members is reflected in the values that continue to guide the club today"
Castlebar Celtic Football Club, celebrating 100 years in existence, has received civic distinction for its contribution to the community over the past century.
Elected members and officials of Castlebar Municipal District gathered at Aras an Chontae, the headquarters of Mayo County Council, to pay tribute to one of the county's biggest and most successful clubs.
Addressing the well-attended civic reception, Councillor Donna Sheridan, cathaoirleach, said she and her fellow councillors were delighted to formally recognise and honour the club in its centenary year.
She stated: "This esteemed institution has played an instrumental role in the promotion and development of soccer within the community of Castlebar, fostering a deep-rooted passion for the sport.
"Founded in 1924 by a dedicated group of visionaries, the club encountered numerous challenges in its formative years.
"Undeterred by these obstacles, the founder members exemplified unwavering determination and perseverance, ensuring the club's establishment and longevity.
"Their enduring legacy is reflected in the values that continue to guide the club today.
"The modern facilities at Celtic Park stand as a testament to the remarkable efforts and commitment of those who have dedicated themselves to the club's success.
"From its humble beginnings, where fielding a team and securing a playing field presented significant challenges, Castlebar Celtic has evolved to accommodate hundreds of players - boys and girls of diverse backgrounds and ages.
"The awarding of this civic reception acknowledges the work and achievements of Castlebar Celtic FC and expressed our profound gratitude to all who have contributed to the club's storied history.
"May Castlebar Celtic FC continue to thrive and inspire for many years to come."
David Mellett, head of Castlebar Municipal District, said a civic reception is the highest award the council can bestow in recognition of success and achievement - and Castlebar Celtic FC is a very worthy recipient.
Joe McDonald, chairman, Castlebar Celtic, said the members of the club were proud to be extended such a fabulous honour by the council.
He described the centenary year as exceptional with a wide range of silverware - including the Connaught Cup - won on the field of play while significant events were hosted at the Linenhall Arts Centre, Mayo County Library and the TF Royal Theatre.
Mr. McDonald said the support of the council and its councillors were central to the club's success and will also be essential in shaping its future.
"I take this opportunity of thanking everybody who contributed in any way to the club over the years as all input to the club is greatly appreciated," he added.
