Mayo native to be remembered at rugby international tonight
THE legacy of the Mayo born 'Father of the Argentine Navy' will be remembered at the rugby international at the Aviva Stadium this evening (Friday).
Ireland and Argentina will once again compete for the Admiral Brown Cup when they meet in their Autumn Nations Series clash.
Mayo man Caelan Doris will captain the Ireland team tonight, and a contingent of supporters from Foxford and Mayo is travelling to Dublin for this special match.
The Admiral Brown Cup (La Copa Almirante Brown) honours the legacy of naval hero Admiral William Brown, who was born in Foxford in 1777.
The inaugural presentation of the Admiral William Brown Cup took place in 2012 and is a joint initiative of the Embassy of Argentina in Dublin, the Irish Embassy in Buenos Aires and the respective rugby bodies, the IRFU and the UAR in Argentina.
Admiral Brown is remembered annually in Foxford where an Argentina Day is celebrated on June 22, and a promenade along the Moy is dedicated to him.
William Brown was a sailor, merchant and naval commander who served in the Argentine Navy during the wars of the early 19th century. His successes in the Argentine War of Independence, the Cisplatine War and the Anglo-French blockade of the Río de la Plata earned the respect and appreciation of the Argentine people, and he is regarded as one of Argentina’s national heroes, where his legacy lives on.
