Consultation opens on Mayo Active Travel Scheme
MAYO County Council Active Travel has announced the initiation of the first proposal in the recently approved Castlebar Local Transport Plan.
Phase one of the Castlebar Active Travel Scheme, connecting residential and employment areas within the south/southwest of the town centre, will incorporate the following sections:
Section 1: R309 Westport Road
Section 2: Lannagh Road
Section 3: Humbert Way
Section 4: John Moore Road
Section 5: Pavilion Road
Section 6: Lawn Road
Section 7: Spencer Street, Station Road, Ballinrobe Road
Section 8: Milebush Road
Existing conditions along these routes are of varying quality, with many parts of the area currently unsafe for pedestrians and cyclists. This is a real barrier for anyone who would like to avail of more active modes of travel in the town.
This phase of the Castlebar Active Travel Scheme will deliver high quality, safe and attractive pedestrian and cyclist facilities, connecting the residential and employment areas within the south/southwest of Castlebar town centre.
The team also want to better connect key destinations in the town, such as the train station, the hospital and the university, contributing to people’s personal health, as well as the health of the climate.
The Active Travel team is very keen to ensure that the scheme also considers the priorities of local stakeholders where possible and they are now accepting submissions in respect of the scheme, which is at the very early stages of design exploration.
While there is not currently any scheme documentation to review, written submissions or observations relating to highlighted routes can be made between now and December 12, and these will be taken into consideration by the design team working on the scheme. Submissions or observations received will not be published.
Submissions or observations can be made online or in writing and addressed to: ‘Castlebar Active Travel Scheme’, FAO: Cathy Mellett, Senior Executive Engineer, Active Travel, Ballinrobe Area Office, Kilmaine Road, Ballinrobe, County Mayo, F31RR96.
The closing date for submissions or observations is Thursday, December 12, at 5 p.m.
Submissions can also be made online through the consultation portal consult.mayo.ie. See https://consult.mayo.ie/en/content/castlebar-active-travel-scheme.
