Dillon welcomes Mayo GAA stadium being opened up to other codes
Minister of State Alan Dillon TD has welcomed the prospect of Mayo GAA opening Hastings Insurance McHale Park to other sports, such as Connacht Rugby, citing significant economic and sporting potential for the county.
Dillon, a two-time GAA All-Star who played over 15 years for Mayo, believes the initiative could play a key role in funding Mayo GAA’s long-awaited Centres of Excellence.
He stated: “Mayo GAA must explore new commercial opportunities outside its current structure.
"Hosting rugby matches or other major events at McHale Park would significantly boost tourism, generate revenue, and reinforce Mayo’s reputation as a premier sports destination."
The minister pointed to Cork GAA’s successful integration of Munster Rugby fixtures at Páirc Uí Chaoimh as a proven model.
Dillon emphasised that careful engagement with McHale Road residents, the county board, and clubs is essential to ensure the proposal benefits all stakeholders.
“The potential is enormous and the time to act is now.
"This could be a game-changer for Mayo as a sporting venue with its floodlights and all seater stadium, and a close partnership with Connacht Rugby is an exciting step forward for the entire Western region,” he added.
