'Hello, Beijing' tourism celebration of 45 years of China-Ireland relations
THE Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism hosted the 'Hello, Beijing' tourism promotion event at the Hyatt Centric, The Liberties, Dublin, celebrating 45 years of diplomatic relations between China and Ireland.
The event featured prominent speakers, including Yang Tong, Charge d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Ireland; Sun Jian, Deputy Director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism; and James Kenny, Industry Manager - Emerging Markets at Tourism Ireland.
Among the attendance was Catherine O'Grady Powers of Glen Keen Farm in Louisburgh.
Yang Tong highlighted the enduring friendship between China and Ireland, based on mutual respect and shared cultural appreciation.
Sun Jian underscored Beijing’s unique offerings for Irish tourists, sharing that Beijing received 2.719 million inbound visitors from January to September 2024 - a 207.8% year-on-year increase. He encouraged Irish travellers to take advantage of the recent visa-free entry policy, which allows Irish passport holders to visit China visa-free for up to 15 days.
Sun invited visitors to experience Beijing’s rich blend of ancient and modern attractions, such as the Great Wall, the UNESCO-listed Central Axis, and Olympic venues, promising an enriching and dynamic experience.
James Kenny emphasised the potential for enhanced cooperation in tourism, with benefits for both nations.
Special guest Kevin Carey, an Irish entrepreneur and University College Dublin graduate, shared his longstanding connection to Beijing, dating back to his first visit in 1976. He reflected on the city’s transformation over time.
Travel enthusiast Paula Kilgarriff also shared insights into Beijing’s unique attractions, including its cultural heritage and dual Olympic legacy.
The event concluded with a lucky draw, with prizes including round-trip tickets to Beijing from Hainan Airlines and a three-night tour package, bringing added excitement.
During their visit, the Beijing delegation met with the Ireland China Culture and Tourism Association to explore future partnerships and extended invitations to Irish tourism representatives for the 2025 Beijing International Tourism Development Conference and a familiarisation trip.
The 'Hello, Beijing' event underscored Beijing’s commitment to deepening cultural and tourism exchange with Ireland, fostering stronger ties and paving the way for future collaboration.
