Snowfall to Storm Bert: Mayo set for intense weather conditions
Mayo remains in the grip of severe weather as heavy snow continues to cause major disruptions ahead of the weekend's arrival of Storm Bert.
The county has borne the brunt of the ongoing snowstorm, with dangerous conditions reported on key roads, particularly between Castlebar and Westport.
Schools across Mayo closed today, including those in Westport, Ballina, and Castlebar, as school bus routes have been rendered impassable. Local authorities are advising residents to stay indoors if possible, and motorists are being urged to check weather updates frequently.
Several trees have fallen across roads, blocking routes and delaying emergency services. The Castlebar to Westport area, in particular, has been hit hard, with authorities working to clear debris.
Travel around towns in the south like Ballinrobe and Claremorris is also difficult, as snow accumulations continue to pose a significant hazard to drivers.
In addition to the ongoing snowstorm, Met Éireann has issued a Status Orange rain warning for Mayo as Storm Bert looms.
Expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the region from midnight tonight, the storm will worsen already difficult conditions. Winds will be particularly strong along coastal areas, with gusts reaching near gale force.
The warning is in effect until 10 a.m. Saturday, with authorities forecasting possible flooding, fallen trees, and difficult travel conditions across Mayo.
There’s concern over localised flooding in low-lying areas, and some areas may experience river flooding as the rain intensifies.
With further spells of strong winds and heavy rain expected throughout the weekend, conditions will only worsen, particularly as temperatures rise and snow begins to melt.
Authorities are advising caution, as slippery roads and poor visibility could lead to further accidents, particularly along the county’s rural routes.
Residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and make necessary preparations for the storm’s arrival. Local communities are urged to remain vigilant as the worst of the weather sets in.
