Mayo meals-on-wheels service is reinstated
Mayo Aontú Councillor Paul Lawless has confirmed that the much needed meals-on -wheels service for Ballindine has been reinstated.
The service had been paused to the disquiet of many elderly and vulnerable people in the rural Mayo area that relied on it .
Councillor Lawless stated: “Thankfully a workable and viable solution has been found for now which sees the meals-on-wheels service back up and running.
"This is thanks to other providers in Milltown, Ballinrobe, Mayo Abbey and Brickens who have agreed to bring the meals to people of Ballindine and Irishtown.
“The Mayo South West Development Company and the Ballindine Meals on Wheels committee really worked so hard to bring a solution to this and they are to be commended.
“The service is run on a three-day basis, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday with lunches being given to people for the days in between so effectively, older people had prepared food for five days.
“It’s a truly vital service. So many people depend on this service, and it gives them a huge layer of added security”.
“Meals on Wheels isn’t just about the food, it is about the interaction between human beings and at a time when loneliness is a huge issue , it is more important than ever ”.
“The long term plan is to reinstate the Ballindine Meals on Wheels service and a recruitment campaign has been launched by the Mayo South West Development Company to recruit personnel for the Rural Social Scheme (RSS) in the Ballindine area.
