Mayo candidate wants main party leaders to resolve Enoch Burke situation
He wants matter raised during tonight's RTÉ debate
Mayo general election candidate Gerry Loftus has called for an urgent resolution to the Enoch Burke situation.
The Lahardane-based representative stated: "The days are long gone when this was seen as a joke where a young teacher continued to show up at the school he worked in - but was not allowed to work because of his religious beliefs.
"This is a damning indictment by the outgoing government of what we stand for as a country.
"This man has no criminal conviction, yet he is in jail now for a long period of time with no effort being made to resolve this issue.
"This is no longer acceptable. I am now asking the three potential leaders of this country to commit to resolving this issue within the first 100 days of the new government.
"I am asking RTE to put this question to the three leaders in the election debate tonight.
"I am calling on all party candidates in Mayo to contact their party leaders and make a public statement as to where they stand on the Enoch Burke issue.
"I am calling on all independent candidates to do likewise."
