Beloved north Mayo hotel to reopen as homelessness shelter
Mulhern’s Bar, Restaurant, and Hotel in Crossmolina, also known as “The Dolphin,” has officially ceased trading, bringing to an end a cherished chapter in the town’s history.
The announcement was made earlier this week, citing economic challenges faced by the hospitality sector.
In a statement shared on social media, the proprietors explained the difficult decision:
“Due to the current economic challenges facing the hospitality sector, we unfortunately have come to the realisation that it is no longer financially viable to continue.
"For this reason, Mulhern’s Bar, Restaurant, and Hotel has ceased trading.
"As of today, we are delighted to have the opportunity to provide temporary accommodation for Irish persons and families that find themselves experiencing homelessness, working directly with Mayo County Council for the Ballina municipal district.
"We feel it is important that the local community know that the function room and grounds can still be used for the local community if required, and enquiries can be sent to info@thedolphinhotel.ie.
"We ask you to respect the privacy and consideration for our residents.”
The repurposing of the hotel highlights the growing demand for emergency accommodation in the region.
According to recent figures, over 150 people in Mayo are experiencing homelessness, with limited options for temporary housing. The collaboration with Mayo County Council aims to address this urgent need.
Despite the stated intent to provide refuge for local families, the hotel’s closure and new purpose have stirred mixed reactions in Crossmolina.
A small protest was held outside the now-shuttered premises on Ballina Road, reflecting concerns among some locals who fear the facility may accommodate asylum seekers.
These fears were fuelled by a Section 5 planning notice submitted to Mayo County Council, which generated further speculation and debate.
However, the proprietors have been clear in their commitment to supporting Irish families in need. By transitioning from a hospitality venue to a homelessness shelter, Mulhern’s is adapting to serve a vital community function during a challenging time.
In their statement, the operators reassured residents that the hotel’s function room and grounds remain available for community use.
