Mixed news on west Mayo water and sewage projects
COUNCILLORS in west Mayo have received 'mixed news' on water and sewage projects in their area, following a meeting with Irish Water representatives.
The positives are that Louisburgh should have water from Lough Mask in late 2025 and a €2 million upgrade of the water treatment plant on Clare Island will also be completed next year, said Councillor Peter Flynn after the meeting.
“Unfortunately,” he continued, “it is clear that it will be 2030 before the treatment plant in Newport will be delivered.”
Said Councillor Flynn in a post on his social media: “The Irish Water reps finally confirmed that other locations in Mayo and Ireland had been prioritised over Newport, which explains why 10 years has been lost and in particular why there was such a long delay in applying for the foreshore licence which is critical to the project.
“Can the plant be fast tracked now?
“Unfortunately No as the foreshore licence needs to be approved, environmental assessments need to be done, planning permission is required and land acquisitions need to be completed before any building work commences.”
Calling out pre-election promises by a local candidate, he said: “When you hear some of the irresponsible comments on the run up to the election this Friday it is understandable why the electorate are sceptical about politicians. Please don't be fooled.
“I have worked hard with Brendan (Councillor Mulroy), Johnno (Councillor O'Malley) and Christy (former Councillor Hyland) over many years to push for the treatment plant in Newport.
“Today just confirmed what we already suspected but we will keep the fight going.”
