Speed limit reductions pushed back, Mayo councillors told
THE implementation of reduced speed limits on local roads will not happen until next spring.
The reduction from 80 kph to 60 kph was due to come into effect in November, but that has now been pushed back.
North Mayo Councillor Gerry Coyle sought clarification on when the new speed limits will come into effect, noting at a municipal district meeting how the full county council had adjourned discussing them until December.
Councillor Coyle said they won't cut bushes or take down overhanging trees and he suggested the first step they should be taking is to make the roads safe so people can see where they are going.
Municipal head Seamus O'Mongáin said the deadline has been pushed back nationally to March.
A decision on what roads remain at 80kph will have to be made by the council at a meeting in advance of that.
These have already been discussed at district level.
