Mayo organisation wins prestigious tourism award at Gradaim na Gaeltachta
Comharchumann Forbartha Ionad Deirbhile (CFID), based in Eachleim, Co. Mayo, has been honoured with the Gaeltacht Tourism Project Award at the esteemed Gradaim na Gaeltachta ceremony hosted by Údarás na Gaeltachta.
The awards, which celebrate excellence across the Gaeltacht community, were presented by chief executive Tomás Ó Síocháin and chairperson Siobhán Ní Ghadhra at a special event held in Na Forbacha, Co. Galway.
The organisation was recognised for its exceptional work on the SOLAS visitor centre – a dynamic tourism project that showcases the rich heritage, culture and maritime traditions of the Erris region. This project has not only highlighted the unique stories of the Atlantic, but has also served as a cornerstone for local tourism, economic growth and cultural preservation.
Speaking at the ceremony, Údarás na Gaeltachta chief exec Tomás Ó Síocháin emphasised the transformative impact of initiatives like SOLAS.
He stated: “Gradaim na Gaeltachta is a wonderful demonstration of the pioneering work taking place in Gaeltacht communities. From tourism projects to green economy initiatives, communities are showing innovation and resilience. It’s important to recognise and celebrate what these groups are achieving for their communities.”
Chairperson Siobhán Ní Ghadhra highlighted the vital role of organisations like Comharchumann Forbartha Ionad Deirbhile in shaping the future of the Gaeltacht.
“The high standard of work being carried out in every Gaeltacht area is a source of pride and encouragement,” she said. “These winners demonstrate that our Gaeltacht communities have a bright future ahead, as they nurture language and culture, create employment, and develop high-quality community infrastructure.”
Rónán Mac Con Iomaire, Director of Regional, Community & Language Development at Údarás na Gaeltachta, also praised the efforts of Gaeltacht community groups.
He commented: “These organisations strengthen their communities, and consequently the Gaeltacht as a whole. The positive impact of their projects on the language, community, and local economy is evident.”
Chairman of CFID, John Gallagher, expressed his gratitude to Údarás na Gaeltachta for the award.
“We are grateful to Údarás na Gaeltachta for their support throughout this project,” he continued. “There has been a phenomenal amount of work put into this project by CFID for a number of years and it is great to get the recognition.
"We are grateful to all our team in SOLAS and we are hoping for a bright future for SOLAS in terms of tourism development and employment opportunities in the area.”
