Calleary poised for key role in Fianna Fáil government

Dara Calleary expressed joy after securing his fifth general election victory in 2024, with a significant increase in his vote share.

Celebrating the result, Calleary highlighted his achievement of receiving votes “in every box in the county,” solidifying his reputation as Mayo's most experienced politician.

Reflecting on his success, Calleary thanked his party colleagues for their support across various local areas, particularly in Belmullet and Swinford, where Fianna Fáil remains strong despite lacking other government candidates. “We went at it in all kinds of weather, and I’m humbled by the support of my team,” he said.

With a Fianna Fáil-led government likely, Calleary’s aspirations for a top cabinet role are high. “I absolutely want to lead a department on my own,” he stated confidently.

Despite his personal success, Calleary acknowledged the disappointment of returning to the Dáil alone, as his running mate in Castlebar, Lisa Chambers, did not secure a seat. He praised her campaign efforts, calling it “extraordinary.”
