Historic day for Aontú as Paul Lawless secures seat in Mayo

Paul Lawless has been elected as the party's second-ever TD after its leader, Peadar Toibín.

The victory, secured at the final count, marks a significant milestone both locally and nationally for the political party.

In his victory speech, Lawless reflected on his journey, recalling the long odds he faced when he began his campaign, stating, “I started at 200/1.”

He expressed his gratitude to his family and campaign team for their support. Lawless also acknowledged the party’s remarkable progress, pointing out that Aontú had doubled its vote since the 2020 election.

Lawless emphasised the tireless work that led to his success. “Many have asked me how we got here,” he said. “It’s due to the work rate we put in, listening to people, and raising their issues.”

The journey to this historic win began in 2020 when Lawless, despite not being elected, dedicated himself to addressing the concerns of the community.

His commitment to these issues was rewarded when he was elected as a local councillor in the Claremorris LEA in June of this year.

This victory has further solidified his standing as a rising political figure in Mayo.
