Changing of the guard at family-run north Mayo supermarket
Margaret and William Barrett announced their retirement and the handover of their beloved supermarket, Barrett’s of Lahardane to local businessman Shane Loftus and his wife, Valerie this weekend.
After an impressive 37 years at the helm of Barrett’s Supermarket, Margaret and William are stepping back to enjoy a well-earned retirement. “It’s time for Margaret to put her feet up,” a statement shared on social media stated.
Barrett’s has been a cornerstone of the Lahardane community for nearly 120 years, a legacy that the Barrett family has been proud to uphold. Reflecting on their time in the business, Margaret and William shared their gratitude with the community.
“We want to sincerely thank every customer who ever came through our doors. Over the past 37 years, we’ve employed 395 staff members, and we’re deeply grateful to each and every one of you for making the business what it is today,” the couple said.
A special mention was made for their mother, Imelda, who remains a guiding force in their lives. “To our Mum, still going strong, we want to say a very special thank you for all your wisdom and guidance over the years,” they added.
The new operators, Shane and Valerie Loftus, are well-known in the local community and have vowed to continue the Barrett’s tradition of exceptional service.
The couple’s involvement ensures the supermarket will remain a vital hub for residents beneath Nephin and on the shore of Lough Conn.
The Barrett family, including their children Liam, Roisín, and Mairéad, expressed heartfelt thanks to the village for their dedicated support over the decades.
As the family steps away from the business, they leave with a legacy of dedication and community spirit that will not be forgotten.
Sincere thanks and best wishes for the future, Margaret and William Barrett.
