Mayo TD urges swift action as government formation talks to begin
Talks to form a new government are set to commence this week, and Mayo TD Dara Calleary has reiterated the need for speed in the process.
The Fianna Fáil deputy, called for the government to be established “quickly” as his party emerges from the recent election with the largest number of seats in Dáil Éireann.
Fianna Fáil leader Michéal Martin has announced that the party will convene for a parliamentary meeting on Wednesday to discuss the next steps toward forming a government. With just under 50 seats, Fianna Fáil is poised to return to power, leading a coalition government.
Ballina’s Calleary, expressed his ambition to play a significant role in shaping the next programme for government. He also made his aspirations clear, stating that he “absolutely wants to lead a Department in Leinster House.”
While Fianna Fáil enjoys a commanding position, their former coalition partners, Fine Gael, face a tougher path, likely securing just over 40 seats.
Many political analysts predict that Fianna Fáil will aim to finalise a new government before Christmas, potentially in collaboration with Fine Gael and another grouping.
Whether this third component will comprise Independents, the Labour Party, or the Social Democrats remains uncertain.
