Donal Benson honoured at Mayo Football League AGM after 50 years of dedicated service

The Mayo Football League's Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place on November 26 at Umbro Park, Milebush.

While the sitting committee was re-elected, one notable absence marked the occasion, the departure of long-serving committee member Donal Benson, who previously announced his decision to step down at a League Management Committee (LMC) meeting.

Donal Benson leaves behind a legacy of tireless service, not just to Mayo football, but to the broader football community, having dedicated decades to the betterment of the sport.

On the night, League Chairman Seamus Hughes paid a heartfelt tribute to Benson, acknowledging his remarkable contributions.

“I’d like to single out Donal,” Hughes stated. “At our last league management meeting, Donal informed us he would be stepping down at this AGM after 50 years’ service to the league as an officer and as a manager of both youth and Oscar Traynor teams. Indeed, before Joe Kelly this year, Donal was the only manager to have reached the final with a representative team, making it to the 1981 final where they narrowly missed out.”

Hughes continued by detailing Benson’s various roles and accomplishments over the years. “Donal has held many roles, including chairman, and was instrumental in several key initiatives, such as the implementation of summer football in 1994. His contributions to the game in Mayo are immeasurable. He has always been ready to do whatever was needed to improve football in the county.”

Benson’s influence extended beyond county borders, representing the Mayo League at Connaught and national levels and consistently advocating for the league’s interests.

“On a personal note,” Hughes added, “I’d like to thank Donal for all the help and advice he’s given me during my time as chairman and since I joined the league.”

Concluding his tribute, Hughes said: “I just want to say a big thank you and wish you all the best for the future. Don’t be a stranger at Umbro Park, you are always welcome here.”
