Mayo community in shock over tragic death of popular doctor

Communities across south Mayo are reeling with shock and numbness today following the death of a local GP from injuries received when he was struck by a vehicle in his hometown, Ballinrobe.

Dr. Martin Finnerty sustained injuries which proved fatal while walking in the Church Lane area of Ballinrobe shortly after 6.30 p.m. yesterday.

The father-of-three was a highly popular personality and built up a busy GP practice in the town over many years,

His body has been brought to Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar for a post mortem examination later.

A man arrested in the aftermath of the incident has since been released without charge.

Gardai are seeking witnesses and/or dashcam camera footage relating to the impact.

The Church Lane area of Ballinrobe has been sealed off as a forensic investigation continues.

Community leaders in Ballinrobe have described the loss of Dr. Finnerty as heartbreaking and tragic.

“This is a terrible blow to the town," commented Councillor Michael Burke this morning.

He recalled: “Dr. Martin gave all his patients lots of time and attention. He never rushed anybody out the door."
