Mayo North Tourism is a vital driver of economic growth in the region
Mayo North Tourism, the organisation dedicated to promoting north Mayo and surrounds as a vibrant tourism destination, continues to make a significant impact on the local economy.
According to an independent assessment conducted by Repucon Consulting, the organisation’s initiatives generated an estimated €2.78 million in tourism-related revenue in 2023 alone.
This report, supported by Fáilte Ireland, highlights the critical value of Mayo North Tourism’s work and underscores the importance of sustaining support for this essential community resource.
In 2023, Mayo North Tourism’s destination website, www.northmayo.ie, played a key role in attracting visitors, generating an impressive €2.78 million in economic impact.

CRITICAL
These figures underscore Mayo North Tourism’s critical role in driving both international and domestic tourism to the area, directly benefiting local businesses and communities.
Since its founding in 2013, Mayo North Tourism, operating under Moy Valley Resources IRD and supported by Ballina Municipal District GMA, memberships, and Ballina Chamber of Commerce via office space and utilities, has worked relentlessly to position North Mayo as a leading tourism destination.
The organisation has developed a trusted regional brand, secured extensive national and international media coverage, and produced high-quality marketing materials, reaching over two million people annually on social media. Additionally, it supports local events and festivals, boosting visitor numbers and enhancing the area's profile.
This year, Mayo North Tourism was recognised as 'Best Community-Led Tourism Initiative 2024 – West of Ireland' at the European Travel Awards.
The sinking of the MV Shingle in Killala Bay to create an artificial reef further highlighted Mayo North Tourism’s reach, with 2.9 million hits across its online platforms for this global attraction.
Alongside this, the organisation celebrated its members with a hugely successful giveaway bonanza, worked with high-profile influencers and content creators, and showcased the unique offerings of the region.
“The impact of Mayo North Tourism on our region’s economy and profile cannot be overstated,” said Mairéad Melody Carr, manager of Mayo North Tourism. “Our work connects local communities with visitors from around the globe, showcasing the unique charm of north Mayo and west Sligo. With continued support, we can build on this success and drive even greater benefits for the region.”
CHALLENGES
Mayo North Tourism’s ability to maintain its momentum is under threat, however, due to challenges in securing stable core funding.
Historically supported by Mayo County Council’s General Municipal Allocation, recent funding cuts have placed additional pressure on the organisation.
Despite these challenges, Mayo North Tourism continues to deliver exceptional value for money, driving visitor growth and economic impact far beyond its modest budget.
David Dwane, chairperson of Moy Valley Resources IRD, emphasised the importance of sustained financial backing. He stated: “Mayo North Tourism has done remarkable work over the last decade to build a strong tourism brand for this region. It would be damaging for the industry in our region if this work could not continue.”
Annette Maughan, CEO of Moy Valley Resources IRD, added: “Uncertainty around core funding has always been a challenge, but the recent cuts call the future viability of this project into question. I urge our local politicians, council executives, and businesses to rally behind this valuable initiative. By working together, we can ensure the continued growth and prosperity of north Mayo as a premier tourism destination.”
Mayo North Tourism’s collaborative efforts and achievements have created a solid foundation for regional tourism. However, as Ireland’s tourism industry faces challenges from rising costs and changing visitor dynamics, the need for sustained support is greater than ever.
By contributing to Mayo North Tourism’s business membership programme, starting at just €150 per year, local businesses can help ensure the continuation of vital destination marketing efforts. Additionally, increased backing from policymakers and stakeholders can strengthen the organisation’s capacity to weather current challenges and thrive into the future.
Mayo North Tourism’s impact is undeniable, and its work has been instrumental in driving economic and cultural benefits for the region. With continued support from Fáilte Ireland, local authorities, and community stakeholders, the organisation is poised to build on its successes and contribute even more to north Mayo’s future prosperity.
