Funeral of much-loved Mayo GP who died in tragic accident
The funeral arrangements have been announced for Dr. Martin Finnerty, The Demesne, Neale Road, Ballinrobe, and late of Athenry, Co. Galway.
He died from injures he sustained after being struck by a vehicle while out walking in the Church Lane area of south Mayo town on Thursday.
The tragedy has cast a dark shadow of sorrow and loss over the community where he was held in such high regard.
He is mourned by his heartbroken family: wife Paula (née Walsh, Ballaghaderreen), son Peter, and Síoda and Sibéal.
Martin is also survived by his brother Dr. Michael Finnerty (Tralee) and his wife, Bernie, his sister Sheila Flanagan (Mullingar) and her husband, Mick, Paula's sisters and brothers Anne, Karen Liam Vincent and Noel, his nieces and nephews Ciara, Matt, Alisha, Gavin and Éala and all of the extended Finnerty and Walsh families .
Heartfelt sympathy is extended to the bereaved family on their loss.
Martin will also be fondly remembered by his great friends, neighbours and all of his many patients in whom he took such pride and care.

Many warm tributes are being paid to the deceased on social media.
"Martin was a brilliant doctor who was so kind, caring and obliging to all his patients. There are no words," one stated.
"Dr. Martin was one fine gentleman. He is such a loss to his family and the community. He really took great care of his patients every day," one said.
A further tribute observed: "A truly wonderful doctor and a lovely person. Martin will be so missed by all the community. "
Reposing at Cummins Funeral Home, Ballinrobe (F31 EP63), on Monday, December 16, from 4 until 8 p.m. with private removal to his home afterwards.
Requiem Mass takws place on Tuesday at 11.30 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Ballinrobe (F31 YA29) with funeral then proceeding to the New Cemetery, Ballinrobe.
