Mayo county town's parish magazine, 53 years going strong

The 53nd edition of the annual Castlebar Parish Magazine is currently on sale at local outlets.

It includes all the usual features that have made the publication such a success over the past five decades.

The front cover features an aerial view of Castlebar Military Barracks captured some years ago by Studio X.

The site has been the subject of much media coverage in recent weeks due to plans to build the new Mayo College of Further Education and Training at the location.

On the back cover, there is an eye-catching image by Frank Fullard of the historic Castlebar Courthouse.

The magazine was edited by Joe Redmond and published by JBohan Design.

In his editorial, Mr. Redmond said at a time of such upheaval of violation of human rights throughout the world, "we should be grateful for the friendship and peace we enjoy."

He also noted that during the course of the year the magazine lost three of its most loyal supporters and contributors, Michael Mullen, Paddy Devaney and Lily Sheridan.

The publication is packed with splendid articles and photographic features which will bring joy to Castlebar people at home and abroad over the festive season.

The contributors include Sean Lyons, Tara Baynes, Alan King, David McDonald, Josephine Higgins Moran, Michael Baynes, Jimmy Blake, Tom Gillespie, Tom Kelly, Johnny Mee, Peter Killeen, Kevin McAleese, Joe Butler and, of course, the editor, Joe.

Tom Campbell, Alison Laredo, the family of the late Liam Lyons, Michael Donnelly, Frank Fullard, John Mee, Mike Staunton, Heverin Photography and John Moylette contributed photographs.
